British Columbia Recreation And Parks Association: Create An Active Community Through Active Transportation

BURNABY, BC - (CCNMatthews)The Active Communities Initiative and the BC Recreation and Parks Association have developed an Active Transportation Workshop series on the benefits of investing in more walk-able and activity friendly environments. During the workshop, participants will learn how to create active communities by design and how investing in walkways, trail systems, greenways, bikeways and blue-ways can help improve the health of communities.

This full day event is free and will be of interest to city councilors, urban and regional planners, transport engineers, fitness and recreation staff, local business owners, school instructors and administrators, and concerned citizens.

The workshop, taking place May 16, 2007 from 8:30am-3:00pm at Kelowna's Coast Capri Hotel (1171 Harvey Avenue), will feature walk-ability expert Mark Fenton, a recognized authority of public health issues and Pat Hunt, a registered Active Community Team Member and past Coordinator of Coalition for Active Living.

Fenton's presentation will focus on the need for community, environmental and public policy initiatives and he will share his expertise on creating trails, walkways, green space and blue-ways to help increase activity levels and improve health. Mark will also conduct a walk-ability assessment/audit to identify areas for improvement that are appropriate for all communities.

Hunt's facilitated session will guide participants through a process to identify and strategize around local initiatives to create environments valuing active transportation.
